Dear Readers,
As 2019 comes to an end, so will our publishing. At least temporarily. Over the last few months we’ve thought a lot about the types of stories we want to deliver to readers, and they simply can’t be done without the work of writers and photographers around the world, and a larger staff on the home base side. More importantly, a major goal when we started was to pay journalists fairly. At this point we can’t do that.
We started Curiosity Magazine with $3,500 in Kickstarter funding, and I’m proud we’ve been able to publish and pay more than 100 journalists over 18 months, and that we’ve been able to share stories from all over the globe. Hopefully some of them have inspired you to book a trip, made you see a place differently, or think about tourism more critically.
One of our favorite (and your favorite, judging by the numbers) sections of the magazine is the #BeaBetterTraveler section. These stories help you navigate issues around travel, such as weighing whether or not to visit somewhere with practices you disagree with, how to travel more sustainably, and how to use your social media influence for good. If you like these stories and want more, I’ll be writing a weekly Be a Better Traveler newsletter starting this week. Those of you already subscribed to the Curiosity Magazine newsletter you should see it in your inbox. Or you can sign up here. It will feature more of the same Be a Better Traveler stories, as well as interviews with journalists and people in the tourism industry doing cool things, recommendations from my own travels, and links to great articles on travel and food from other publications.
We hope to bring back Curiosity Magazine in full, and even better, soon. To help you can donate or shop. If you’re a travel brand who wants to partner, get in touch at rebecca@curiositymag.com.
Thank you for reading over the last two years! We’ve been lucky to work with some fantastic journalists and have so many thoughtful, curious readers who have encouraged us along the way. Have a great start to the new year and go out and explore the world in 2020!
